Code: BT-121
Artist: Didaktus Atapmame
Village: Mioko, Mimika Regency
Music is an inseparable part of the Kamoro custom procession. Eme or better known as Tifa became an inspiration of the artwork appearance carved by Didactus, a young artist who was newly inaugurated by the customary elders of his village as the heir of carver customary right of the Atapmame clan.
This work comes with a variety of motifs such as fish gills, bat bones, mangrove crabs and sago which is the staple food of the Kamoro community.
“Appreciating the local artist's artwork means participating in preserving the Indonesian culture. Please contact us for more information on other types of carvings”.
MSME Profile
The Maramowe Foundation is home to more than 550 Kamoro weaving and carving artists in Central Papua. Our work program focuses on the preservation, empowerment and promotion of the Kamoro culture which was weakened by the prohibition of holding rituals until the mid-19th century, where carving was an important part of the ritual. Now the onslaught of cultural acculturation and technological advances are again threatening the carving tradition. Selling artworks through the Kamoro Art Gallery, a business unit of the Maramowe Foundation, is one way to help artists continue carving. Buying their works is a form of appreciation for the local wisdom of Papuan culture where the proceeds from the sale will be fully returned to the Kamoro artists.
